Red 36 - Mystic, CT

This restaurant in the heart of Mystic is just down the road from the Mystic Drawbridge and is right on the water, overlooking all the boats docked for the season. The atmosphere is welcoming, as you see families and friends sitting out on their boats, eating and napping under the hot sun.

The temperature gets a little colder for outdoor seating here, but if you grab a light jacket and some Sperry Top-Siders, you'll fit in quite nicely. Most of their dining is already outside, but they added some patio seating in areas of the parking lot, and some Adirondack chairs for lounging in front of the pier. The bar is not open yet, in accordance with the policies of the state of CT, so they are continuing to offer their Happy Hour menu, anywhere in the restaurant from 4-6, Monday through Friday.

They are not yet taking reservations to dine-out, but even with the number of people on the waitlist when I arrived, what they said would be a 40 minute wait, ended up being only 15-20 minutes.

I took a break form watching NASA's live stream of the Dragon's arrival at the International Space Station for some of my favorite foods at Red 36.

The first image shows the Clam & Bacon Flatbread. Aside from the combination of clams and bacon, it is also cooked with roasted garlic, oregano, parmesan cheese, and olive oil. Again, this was made to perfection: the bacon was crispy, the edges of the flatbread were not burnt, and the middle was chewy and tasty!

The second image displays the Thai Peanut Calamari, fried with calamari rings, instead of the tentacles, it is cooked with a sweet chili sauce and wasabi aioli.

The third image is a combination of the Pulled Pork Sliders and Pulled Pork Quesadillas. The sliders, which come 3 to an order, are served with coleslaw and sandwiched between house-made rolls. The quesadillas are topped with a black salsa and sour cream. It was delicious and I would definitely order it again!

And finally, I ordered the Fried Brussels Sprouts, which were cooked with bacon and served with a chili garlic aioli sauce and lime.

They also have a raw bar, with very large oysters on the half shell. The current price for those were $2.75 each.

If you ever find yourself visiting the Seaport, the Aquarium, Historic Downtown Mystic, or maybe you're just looking for some place to have lunch, remember that Red 36 is open for business again and the waitresses are excited. Also, don't forget that Mystic Drawbridge ice cream is right down the road too!

David Burke Prime Steakhouse (Foxwoods Resort Casino)

David Burke Prime Steakhouse at Foxwoods opened back up for dining in the restaurant 2 days before the official Phase 2 Reopening in CT.  Although the menu is limited, they do not fail to still deliver their premium steaks, and favorite entrees.  Every time I go to David Burke's, I ALWAYS...and I mean ALWAYS (no matter what) order a side of Garlicky Baby Spinach (seen in the first image) and their Double Cut Maple Bacon , which is served as three slices of extra thick-cut candied bacon with a black pepper maple glaze. I promise it is DELICIOUS! I also ordered their 3 course Prime Time Dinner , which allows you to choose from 1 of 5 entrees: Herb-Roasted Chicken, Faroe Island Salmon, Seared Stonington Scallops, a classic cut Prime Rib (12 oz.), or a Petite Filet Mignon (6 oz.). Here, I got a classic cut Prime Rib cooked until it was pink or "medium." I normally eat my steak cooked "well done," but a steak like this tastes better when it's not shriveled up a...

Costello’s Clam Shack - Noank, CT

One of my favorite things about living in New England during the summer is being able to eat fresh seafood by the water.  Since CT is in the process of their Phase 1 reopening, many restaurants have welcomed customers back with outdoor seating, just in time for the warm weather. Temperatures reached into the upper 70s and low 80s today and boats were docked at the shipyard once again.  Not only is it the first time I have sat down to eat at a restaurant since the shutdown, but I also had my first lobster roll of the year--before the first day of summer!! For you seafood lovers who aren’t big fans of the large crustacean, Costello’s also has a wide variety of fried seafood (like the fried whole belly clam roll shown in the picture, served with fries on the side--I substituted one of the orders for sweet potato fries instead of regular ones, for something a little bit different). They also have stuffed clams, and the classic New England clam chowder. The cla...

Grant's Berry Patch - Jewett City, CT

Strawberries are finally in season, and the weather was perfect for "Pick Your Own" at Grant's Berry Patch and Farm yesterday.  Multiple rows of the seasonal red fruit were growing close to the ground and some leaves even sprouted berries of all different sizes.  Priced at $3.95/lb, I left there with almost 20 lbs. of strawberries for myself, family and friends. Once they were properly washed and cooled for a little while, I really liked the smaller strawberries the best, but all of them were fresh, sweet, and juicy.  Some people will use the berries to make jam, jelly, mix them with cream, dip them in chocolate, make them into a smoothie, or just eat them the way they are! However you eat your strawberries, I recommend picking them fresh from your local farm. The experience is tons of fun for families of all ages, and they taste way better than the ones you buy at the grocery store. Besides, strawberries have tons of nutritional benefits: experts say that they are an exc...
