Grant's Berry Patch - Jewett City, CT

Strawberries are finally in season, and the weather was perfect for "Pick Your Own" at Grant's Berry Patch and Farm yesterday.

Multiple rows of the seasonal red fruit were growing close to the ground and some leaves even sprouted berries of all different sizes.

Priced at $3.95/lb, I left there with almost 20 lbs. of strawberries for myself, family and friends. Once they were properly washed and cooled for a little while, I really liked the smaller strawberries the best, but all of them were fresh, sweet, and juicy.

Some people will use the berries to make jam, jelly, mix them with cream, dip them in chocolate, make them into a smoothie, or just eat them the way they are! However you eat your strawberries, I recommend picking them fresh from your local farm. The experience is tons of fun for families of all ages, and they taste way better than the ones you buy at the grocery store. Besides, strawberries have tons of nutritional benefits: experts say that they are an excellent source of vitamin C, they have high levels of antioxidants--which can help protect against heart disease, cancer, and other diseases, and they are high in fiber. Not only do they taste good, but they are also good for the skin and eyes, too!

Get some fresh strawberries before the season ends, because in a few weeks it will be time for blueberries and raspberries.

Abbott’s Lobster in the Rough - Noank, CT

Definitely the BEST lobster roll I’ve had all season so far! And just look at the size of those oysters! Right next to Costello’s Clam Shack, Abbott’s has more steamed seafood, so if you’re looking for some fried clams, you won’t find them here, you’d have to drive over to the shipyard next door, and get them there. Abbott’s is a great place to be on a hot summer day, with outdoor seating along the water; watch the ships sail by and dig into a nice big lunch!

S & P Oyster - Mystic, CT

I have visited Mystic quite a few times, but it was my first time eating at S & P Oyster. I heard many great things about the restaurant, so I finally decided to try it out.  Their dining room is open again. with effective social distancing and health practices being implemented, but they also have outdoor seating in a portion of their parking lot, as well as surrounded by tons of beautiful plants, the iconic drawbridge, and the view of the water.  I ordered the S & P Seafood Pasta , with shrimp, sea scallops, calamari, mussels, fettuccine, white wine garlic sauce, and freshly chopped herbs. which was the ideal size for dinner. I ended up taking the rest home for lunch the next day. For appetizers, I had Prosciutto Wrapped Sea Scallops . It was wood grilled and served with cilantro sauce, piquillo pepper & jicama salsa, and charred corn, kind of like a corn salsa. I also had Spinach & Artichoke Dip , and it was the best I've had in awhile! It was topped with fr...

Red 36 - Mystic, CT

This restaurant in the heart of Mystic is just down the road from the Mystic Drawbridge and is right on the water, overlooking all the boats docked for the season. The atmosphere is welcoming, as you see families and friends sitting out on their boats, eating and napping under the hot sun. The temperature gets a little colder for outdoor seating here, but if you grab a light jacket and some Sperry Top-Siders, you'll fit in quite nicely. Most of their dining is already outside, but they added some patio seating in areas of the parking lot, and some Adirondack chairs for lounging in front of the pier. The bar is not open yet, in accordance with the policies of the state of CT, so they are continuing to offer their Happy Hour menu, anywhere in the restaurant from 4-6, Monday through Friday. They are not yet taking reservations to dine-out, but even with the number of people on the waitlist when I arrived, what they said would be a 40 minute wait, ended up being only 15-20 minutes....
